Sophie Bear, Miss Wellsbury and Gerald went away for the
Bank Holiday weekend. It means they get three days holiday
from School rather than just two. Miss Wellsbury asked them
where they would like to go. Sophie said, "the seaside.".
Gerald said, "a pub.".
Miss Wellsbury decided to go to Southampton for a few days
so they loaded up the car with everything they needed (including
plenty of sweets for Sophie!) and set off.
First stop was Winchester. They parked the car and set off
to look for some lunch. Winchester is a very old city and
there were lots of interesting things to see.
First they found the "Westgate". This is an old
building that was once a gate to the city. Since then it has
been used as a prison and now it's a museum. From the top
you can see all down the High Street. "Look, I can see
a sweet shop", said Sophie. "Typical.", replied
Miss Wellsbury.
Around the corner is the "Great Hall".
This is the only part of Winchester castle that's
left. It is a huge room with a high ceiling.
At one end is a huge tabletop hanging on the wall.
It's supposed to be the round table that King Arthur
had with all his knights. It weighs a ton.

Winchester is very famous for it's Cathedral. It's
a very impressive building. However Sophie couldn't
see any sweets so they had to carry on ...
|
Sophie arrived in the hotel room and looked out of
the window - "It's a big boat!"

This is the view from Sophie's window!

The next day they drove down the coast a little bit
and Sophie found a telescope. You look through the
one end and things look a lot closer on the other
end. Have you ever used a telescope?

Here's what Sophie could see along the seafront ...

If you click on it - you'll get a much larger
version you can look at!
Why not make your own telescope picture? Sophie shows
you how here...

Sophie visited Winchester first. She recommends visiting
the Westgate and Great Hall. They are at the top of
the High Street and both free.
Then she drove to Southampton, staying in the Holiday
Inn (Hubert something road, by the seafront). Just
been refurbished so it was very good. While in Southampton,
visit WestQuay - the new huge shopping centre. Stop
in John Lewis for a snack - great choice including
breakfast or a crepe / waffle topped with cream and
strawberries.
If you're after somewhere to eat - try WestQuay or
for something more independent try "Bedford Place"
- loads of great Chinese etc...
